Well since that’s what a (web) log is for, here it is:

Above is a photo of a cow on a dairy farm in Winchester, Ontario. While shooting for Eric Duncan’s personal professional portfolio, we went to a farm to get some shots of him with his friends that own the farm. It took me a second to get used to the smell, but then I got right to work.

Eric Duncan with dairy farmers in Winchester, Ontario (Photo: Christopher King)

I’ve been shooting a lot of film again as summertime usually means fair weather and I can get back to experimenting more easily. Part of the struggle is actually how to manage colour balance with colour print films, especially if it hasn’t been in the refrigerator for over a year! Black and white film is much more simple, and manageable.

Here is a photo of Justine Craig who makes her own organic and locally sourced granola mixtures. While it’s not hard making the mixture, the granola was checked at least 4 times while baking to ensure it doesn’t burn so I spent a long day at the bakery shooting photos of the process.

Justine Craig, pouring honey to be mixed with granola (Photo: Christopher King)

Although the photo above was colour corrected in Photoshop (a lab would do that for you anyway, so don’t kid yourself about “straight out of camera”) I did my best to make sure nothing was phoney looking. This is Kodak Ektar 100 film, quite nice, loads of colour and contrast is very nice. I love the colour of the honey Justine is pouring in the pot.

Finally, I’m contemplating buying the 35mm f1.4 G lens that Sony sells so I’ve been using it for a few days from Henry’s Ottawa. The lens is great fun to use, here are some samples from the lens. Hopefully I can do a detailed field report once I’m done.

Hot Dog vendor, downtown Ottawa (Photo: Christopher King)

The wider focal length makes for a good perspective in close-up street photography and the large aperture makes nice “artsy” photos of tulips during the Ottawa tulip festival.

Tulips in May, downtown Ottawa (Photo: Christopher King)

Canadian photographer Ed Burtynsky, also the creator of the documentary Manufactured Landscapes presented a short slide-show of his photos from around the world. Burtynsky concentrates on the effects of industry on Earth’s surface. The slides focused on mining and power generation in Australia, America, and China to name a few.

Somehow, there were so many people that he agreed to do a second lecture and in both groups there were people lined up for standing space because the tickets sold out.

That’s not a paint recipe or anything, actually it’s the dilution required for one of the chemicals used to develop black and white film. I just bought a new bottle of Blazinal* and got at some film that I’ve kept in the fridge waiting to develop since June! I Love film, It’s natural characteristics cannot be replaced. This photo was actually taken at the House of Paint 2009!

(And for all you film buffs, this is Ilford FP4 shot at 250ISO developed for about 8 minutes in Rodinol 1:25 at 20°C and scanned in with a Minolta Scan Dual III)

Rodinal is illegal in Canada, so it is reprocessed and sold under a new name.

Edit October 2, 2010: Rodinal is being labeled as Rodinal again in Canada now.

It’s hard to take pictures of non university related topics on campus, but I figured I could go to the Ice House for the photo and to my advantage, the Carleton Ravens women’s ice hockey team was practicing.
